                                                      Happy December 1st

It's been a busy week and it's only Tuesday! The children have so much to be proud.  They have completed a 5 paragraph essay persuading everyone not to eat turkey for Thanksgiving.  They really are quite cute and entertaining.  We are wrapping up our piktocharts describing strategies for multi-digit multiplication, and we have begun our author study. The children should each have a book from their author and be reading each night.

I have attached a new site for our Go Math-this site provides the children with the student edition of the math book as well as resources.  I will also be giving them assignments on it and the site will be tracking their progress.  I have given them their user name and the password. Please take a look at it yourself.

I look forward to a great month with the kids and have lots of exciting projects coming up! Remember report cards will be posted to the parent portal after December 10th.
Have a great night.
Smiles :)

Piktocharts for Multiplying

Hi  Everyone,
The children have been very busy this week creating Piktocharts and publishing them to the web.  We are using this technology to summarize chapter 2 Multiplying Multi-Digit Numbers.  Please take time to look at the children's work.

Happy November!!
Can you believe we have been in school for two months already! We have a short week this week.
I have assigned the children an author's study- we are just picking the authors at this time.  I have not
not yet assigned the due date.  At the left of this page, under suggested sites the students can view authors they want to research about. They will pick 3 authors indicating which is their first choice, second choice, and third choice.  On Wednesday I will read through their choices and try to accommodate the children's choices.  They will be receiving further instructions on how to complete the project.

Also, please note parent teacher conferences are this week as well as Monday the 9th!

Have a great weekend everyone!
Hugs and Smile :)

Happy Tuesday!

The children have been working very hard this month and it's only just begun.  We have been busy in 4M. We are currently finishing up our rock cycle and soil chapters in Science.  The children have created rock cycle illustrations then wrote about the rock cycle using our 3/5 writing method-5 paragraphs introduction, description of igneous rocks paragraph 1, description of metamorphic rocks and how they fit into the rock cycle, and paragraph 4 sedimentary rocks and how they fit into the rock cycle, and finally the conclusion.  They are currently creating acrostic poems on the rock cycle.

In reading the children have begun the next story, Lewis and Clark and Me, one of my favorite in the book.  The children are always encouraged to look things up at home and bring in what they find.  This topic is on the exploration of Lewis and Clark.  We all would love to see what the children can find out on their own and share with the class.  In our writing, we have created our fall vocabulary and the children are creating original concrete poems.  I am really enjoying what they have to say.

Last week was our Week of Respect and the children had a blast creating positive chalk graffiti on the school property.

Math we have started our second chapter, which consists on algebraic thinking and number operations.  Please make sure to have the children continue to practice their multiplication facts as well as review their notes from class each night.  This chapter takes multiplication and introduces it in a new way of thinking for most of them, so it is very important to review notes on a nightly basis and jot down any questions they may have which they can share with me the next day.

Our reading logs are going to be done a little differently this year.  I have used kidsblog in the past for reading comprehension.  The blog is located to the left on my page here under Important Sites.  The children were given passwords.  Each night after they read they log into kidsblog and create a new post.  Here they will summarize their reading for the night. They also need to ask one question which is to be incorporated into their summaries that they have about what they read.  Ex. I wonder why Zinkoff ran ahead to school without his mother?  or I couldn't imagine being in Zinkoff's shoes when the 3rd grader took his giraffe hat, why didn't he get upset about that?  They need to reflect on what they are reading.  I provide written feed back on the summary in the kidsblog.

If you have any questions or concerns please do not hesitate to contact me.  Email is the quickest and it is up and working :)

Have a great week,
Hugs and Smiles,
Ms. Mayer

Greetings From Ms. Mayer

I hope everyone is having a great summer!! It has definitely gone by fast.  I really am looking forward to a great school year.  The classroom is almost all ready for your first day back.  Remember to get a good night sleep on September 1st so you can all be ready to start fourth grade with a bang!  I will post a link on the blog for your school supplies.  I know it is a long list but we really do use everything.  I keep all the extra notebook in the classroom, so when you finish one, you don't have to worry it's right there waiting for you.  Enjoy the last week of vacation and I'll see you all soon.

Hugs and Smiles,
Ms. Mayer

Ps. Feel free to leave a message here for me and tell me what exciting things you have been doing this summer.  I traveled to Bermuda with my children and explored underground caves.  You will get to see some of the cool things we saw when we do our earth science unit this fall.  I can't wait to share them with you.  My girls and I also drove along the southern east coast stopping in Colonial Williamsburg, North and South Carolina as well! I look forward to hearing from you :) Here are my children on one of our adventures!

Biography Research Paper

Hi Everyone,
The children have been working very hard and enjoying our biography readings.  They have just completed, in class, the timelines of the person they chose to read and learn about.  I have added  to the important sites thinktank.com where the children can generate questions about their famous person, to aid in the research paper process.  All students must have a printed copy of the questions by Tuesday, April 28th.  Remember, you can go to the library or the computer lab is available before and after school.  I can't wait to see the final outcomes of the entire project.  Have a great weekend everyone!
Smiles :)
Ms. Mayer
