Have a Great Weekend- October 11, 2013
Hi Everyone,
Hope you all have a great weekend!
Here is a little recap of our week, as always the children had a jam packed learning week with concepts such as asking questions before reading, during, and after. Summarizing using the Somebody-Wanted-But-So-Then. This is in our interactive reading notebooks, which I told the children to bring home so they can show you what a great job they are doing on them.
In math we have been exploring the world of multiplications. Today the children learned the distributive property and box strategy which helps them break down larger numbers into smaller amounts then added back up to get the final product.
ex: 12 x 7
10x7 + 2x7 = x
First you multiply both sets of numbers to find products, then you add those two products together to find x and/or the product.
Please continue to practice with your children the multiplication facts over the weekend. They are seeing that everything builds around multiplication and if they do not understand them then they will struggle for the rest of the year.
Also your children get homework every night in math and spelling science and social studies alternates. If your child is telling you they do not have homework or I let them do it in class, I never let HW be done in class! It is a way for you to monitor your child's progress at home and give you insight to where their strengths and weaknesses are.
Also it is always best to reach me via email from the school website. I can easily get back to you during the day. If you choose to call into the office because I have called you, I will not be able to reach you until after the school day.
Have a great weekend everyone!! Monday is a 1/2 session day- the children will be dismissed at 12:55

The English Roses- Theme
The children have been working hard on their reading strategies skills. Last week I read aloud "The English Roses" by Madonna. They predicted what the book would be about based on the cover and pictures, and found you can't judge a book by its cover. They discovered that the theme of this book is bullying by exclusion, which is a passive form of bullying but still none-the-less bullying. We talked as a class how this can be prevented and just because someone looks ok on the outside doesn't mean they have a perfect life you should be jealous of. Before reading the book we worked with our interactive notebooks and came up as a class with other themes that are found in literature. Take a look below at the great job they did.

Where did the week go??
happy Friday everyone!
I hope you all take advantage of the wonderful weather we will be having. There are some great activities in the Hudson Valley Region going on to bring the family too. Apple Orchards, Pumpkin patches, and spooky places. There is a link to the left of the page that will give you some great places you can visit.
This week's recap:
In math the children got a better understanding of just what multiplying really means. We created multiple charts and once the children realized what the high lighted numbers actually meant; the light bulbs started going off! It's those moments that make teaching so exciting, when they "get it". Ask your children to show you the multiples chart and the Sieve of Eratosthenes, they are so proud of their new knowledge. This weekend please study with your child multiplication tables. The success of their fourth grade year really does depend on them memorizing those facts. From here on out everything relates back to multiplication.
Reading- our interactive Reading notebooks are really coming along and the students love being able to put some of their own touches on them. I told them to bring them home to finish any coloring on they would like to do that they weren't able to finish in class.
Science- we are moving from rocks to soil. The children will begin to understand how our world is interrelated when they realize rocks break down and become part fo the soil. They are also loving the Brain pop videos that I incorporate into our lessons. If they haven't already told you about them then ask this weekend about the little clips of Mosby and Tim.
Social Studies-On October 24th we will be celebrating United Nations Day- the children will each bring in a dish that is representative of the nation of origin of the student.
