Tonight the homework is very light since many students were not in today.

Complete a story telling about your adventures as a snowflake on this snowy December day.

Have a Great Weekend- October 11, 2013
Hi Everyone,
Hope you all have a great weekend!
Here is a little recap of our week, as always the children had a jam packed learning week with concepts such as asking questions before reading, during, and after. Summarizing using the Somebody-Wanted-But-So-Then. This is in our interactive reading notebooks, which I told the children to bring home so they can show you what a great job they are doing on them.
In math we have been exploring the world of multiplications. Today the children learned the distributive property and box strategy which helps them break down larger numbers into smaller amounts then added back up to get the final product.
ex: 12 x 7
10x7 + 2x7 = x
First you multiply both sets of numbers to find products, then you add those two products together to find x and/or the product.
Please continue to practice with your children the multiplication facts over the weekend. They are seeing that everything builds around multiplication and if they do not understand them then they will struggle for the rest of the year.
Also your children get homework every night in math and spelling science and social studies alternates. If your child is telling you they do not have homework or I let them do it in class, I never let HW be done in class! It is a way for you to monitor your child's progress at home and give you insight to where their strengths and weaknesses are.
Also it is always best to reach me via email from the school website. I can easily get back to you during the day. If you choose to call into the office because I have called you, I will not be able to reach you until after the school day.
Have a great weekend everyone!! Monday is a 1/2 session day- the children will be dismissed at 12:55
Smiles,

The English Roses- Theme
The children have been working hard on their reading strategies skills. Last week I read aloud "The English Roses" by Madonna. They predicted what the book would be about based on the cover and pictures, and found you can't judge a book by its cover. They discovered that the theme of this book is bullying by exclusion, which is a passive form of bullying but still none-the-less bullying. We talked as a class how this can be prevented and just because someone looks ok on the outside doesn't mean they have a perfect life you should be jealous of. Before reading the book we worked with our interactive notebooks and came up as a class with other themes that are found in literature. Take a look below at the great job they did.

Where did the week go??
happy Friday everyone!
I hope you all take advantage of the wonderful weather we will be having. There are some great activities in the Hudson Valley Region going on to bring the family too. Apple Orchards, Pumpkin patches, and spooky places. There is a link to the left of the page that will give you some great places you can visit.
This week's recap:
In math the children got a better understanding of just what multiplying really means. We created multiple charts and once the children realized what the high lighted numbers actually meant; the light bulbs started going off! It's those moments that make teaching so exciting, when they "get it". Ask your children to show you the multiples chart and the Sieve of Eratosthenes, they are so proud of their new knowledge. This weekend please study with your child multiplication tables. The success of their fourth grade year really does depend on them memorizing those facts. From here on out everything relates back to multiplication.
Reading- our interactive Reading notebooks are really coming along and the students love being able to put some of their own touches on them. I told them to bring them home to finish any coloring on they would like to do that they weren't able to finish in class.
Science- we are moving from rocks to soil. The children will begin to understand how our world is interrelated when they realize rocks break down and become part fo the soil. They are also loving the Brain pop videos that I incorporate into our lessons. If they haven't already told you about them then ask this weekend about the little clips of Mosby and Tim.
Social Studies-On October 24th we will be celebrating United Nations Day- the children will each bring in a dish that is representative of the nation of origin of the student.

Happy Weekend
Happy Friday Everyone!!
We have been extremely busy learners this week. The children have been diving into our Writer's Workshop full force. This week we introduced speculative writing to our repetoire. Each group received a different story prompt and the children are really enjoying the writing process for this fun assignment. Ask them more about this weekend.
The children had their first math test today. They will get these back on Monday. Please do not forget to sign them and have your child correct
any mistakes they may have made.
R.E.D folders should be coming back with at least one completed book. Remind your child that it is their responsibility to show me the folder for assessment once they have completed the entire book. Every child is at a different level so some will finish sooner than others.
Monday we will have our science quiz on our Rocks and Minerals vocabulary. The children have been creating rock cycles posters, learning about the different layers of the Earth, and anaylyzing different rock types. Our Brain Pop movies have been an excellent learning tool for them ansd the interaction with the movie questions really gets them excited. Next week, we will be virtually mining rocks and minerals to analyze and classify using the scientific method.
Please go through your children's notebooks and view the wonderful notes they have been taking. Our interactive notebooks will greatly help for review and study guides. They really look very nice! I am very proud of the time and care they are taking to create them. AWESOME JOB Guys!!!
Please encourage your children to visit the links below for School House Rocks videos which correpsond with our lessons.
Your child is being sent home with the access code for our math book. You now will be able to click on the link to the left of this page and access the text book from home as well as practice daily lessons through the games on the site.
Have a GREAT weekend!! :)

Caution Children at Work!!!!
The children have been extremely busy for the past two weeks. We have already had a few assessments, our first spelling test, and our language arts quiz. They have all been trying very hard. Just a reminder that homework has to be done every night and before you sign off on it check to make sure it has been done. The best way to help your child study and come prepared to class the next morning is by asking them what the homework was about, ask them if they liked it. You just might be pleasantly surprised by their answers.
The children are currently beginning our Halloween speculative writing piece that will be published by Halloween. The students are very excited, to capture their audience with their "powerful beginning"! I can't wait to read the spooky tales.
We will be having our Data Math Test on Friday, September 27th. Please remind your child to study each evening.

Happy Friday the 13th!!
Happy Friday the 13th! Ever wonder why this day is suppose to be unlucky? Well wonder no more! Click on my links to the left and you will have all the answers to the history and origins of this dreaded date. The students thought it might be an unlucky day when I assigned them a writing prompt this morning about Friday the 13th, but they soon came to realize they could create the wackiest ideas and write about them, because maybe just maybe these ideas could really happen today. Ask your child to tell you what their ideas and story were about. Finally, needless to say our word of the day was "triskaidekaphobia" don't be afraid to ask what it means to your child. Have a GREAT weekend everyone!! Smiles, Ms. Mayer

Good Evening,
First I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the parents who came out tonight. I would like to introduce myself, my name is Ms. Mayer and I can't wait to get to know all your children. This year, as fourth grade students, we will be exploring the world through hands-on, differentiated and project-based learning. I created this blog so you as parents and your children have easy access to homework, worksheets, websites, and activities we have completed throughout the day. You may also leave a comment for me, should you have any questions I will be checking this each evening or at least try my best to check it at some point in the day. I look forward to working with you and your children this year. Please visit this sight often and see the wonderful work we are doing every day!
Smiles,
Ms. Mayer :)

Brain Breaks
We all reach that point in the day when we just want to put down the pens and pencils, push the books aside and take a breather. I found that these brain breaks work like a charm. The kids love them and it helps motivate them during the rest of the day. Here are a few that my class has come to love!
